La Plaza del Pino, en San Mateo, fue escenario el viernes del pistoletazo de salida a las Fiestas Patronales del municipio, que se prolongarán hasta el próximo 9 de octubre.
Las fiestas comenzaron con el acto de lectura del pregón, que este año corrió a cargo del Presidente del Club de Fútbol Panadería Pulido, Armando Santana, quien recordó ante los presentes cómo fue su llegada al municipio y cómo a lo largo de estos 26 años ha ido adentrándose en la vida social y deportiva de La Vega.
Tras la lectura del pregón se procedió a la entrega de reconocimientos, que este año recayeron sobre distintas personalidades y colectivos del mundo del deporte y la cultura. Por un lado se reconoció la labor de los hermanos Víctor y Ángel Marrero, 
procedentes de Ariñez y con un currículo cargado de éxitos en el mundo del automovilismo. Vinculado también a este mismo sector, el de los rallyes, se premió la trayectoria del vecino Teodoro Vega, conocido como Teo. De la misma forma se otorgó un reconocimiento al Club de Fútbol Panadería Pulido por la labor desarrollada en el municipio. Por otra parte, desde la Concejalía de Cultura se entregó un reconocimiento al artista local Paco Juan Déniz, así como a la Unión Musical Vega de San Mateo.
El acto de apertura de las fiestas culminó con una excelente actuación del grupo Vocal Siete, que presentó su nuevo trabajo musical con una apoteósica representación de temas musicales de diferentes épocas, ganándose una sonora ovación del público asistente, que por segundo año consecutivo volvió a ponerse en pie ante el grupo.
