Reza un dicho popular que la salud es un tesoro que vale más que el oro. “Muchísimo más que el oro. Nunca habrá dinero en el mundo que pague la salud”, asegura Eduardo Domínguez desde el piso de Collado Villalba (Madrid), en el que vive desde hace ocho meses, cuando entró en lista de espera para ser transplantado de los dos pulmones y el corazón.
Veguero de nacimiento, Eduardo sufre una cardiopatía congénita y una hipertensión pulmonar asociada que ha marcado su vida. Le diagnosticaron la enfermedad desde que nació, hace 43 años. “Cuando yo tenía seis meses, un médico le dijo a mi madre: Señora, haga otro porque este se le muere”, señala. Con todo, Eduardo recuerda que vivió una infancia como cualquier niño, sólo que con algunas limitaciones. “Como no podía correr porque me cansaba, cuando jugábamos al fútbol yo siempre era el portero”, recuerda con simpatía. Asegura que sus padres nunca le metieron en una burbuja por estar enfermo, y disfrutó de toda la libertad que quiso, llevando una vida normal hasta que hace unos diez años comenzó a cansarse más de la cuenta y a tener dificultades para respirar. Fue por una gripe que no se curaba cuando los médicos le hicieron una radiografía. A raíz de entonces comenzó un tratamiento para la hipertensión pulmonar, que aunque la tenía diagnosticada, no se estaba tratando.
En la actualidad Eduardo lleva en su interior un desfibrilador, tiene una bomba que le inyecta la medicación y una mochila de oxígeno que le acompaña las veinticuatro horas. Hace tiempo que sabía que necesitaría un transplante, pero fue en febrero de este año cuando comenzó el proceso. Un avión medicalizado lo trasladó a Madrid, donde le realizaron las pruebas correspondientes para otorgarle la condición de “apto” y entrar así en la lista de espera.
“Mucha gente se queja de la sanidad pública y yo creo que tenemos una sanidad alucinante. Nada más pensar lo que ha costado mi traslado de Gran Canaria a Madrid… Tuve que venir en un avión medicalizado, con un médico, una enfermera y dos pilotos. Sólo el viaje supone un coste de unos 6.000 euros. El desfibrilador que llevo en el cuerpo puede costar unos 20.000. ¿A quién le puedo decir yo que la sanidad pública no es buena?”.
La espera
Ocho meses después de aquel viaje Eduardo continúa viviendo en Madrid, en un piso donde está acompañado por su esposa y sus hermanas, que se turnan para viajar y estar con él. Asegura que los gastos que supone su situación no podrían asumirlos si no fuera por la ayuda del Gobierno de Canarias, que concede dietas mensuales de alojamiento y manutención a los enfermos canarios que esperan un transplante en la capital de España. “Si no fuera por esa ayuda, el 95% de los pacientes que estamos esperando un transplante tendríamos que volver a casa a esperar el fin de nuestros días”, afirma tajante.
Allí, en aquel piso del extrarradio madrileño aguarda la llamada del hospital. Su día a día pasa por levantarse, desayunar, leer y dar pequeños paseos por la zona. Cuando le toca, visita el centro de salud o el hospital. No puede alejarse a más de hora y media de distancia del Hospital Puerta de Hierro, porque la llamada para el transplante puede llegar en cualquier momento, y asegura que esa incertidumbre es lo que peor lleva.
“La espera es lo más desesperante. No tengo miedo a que luego las cosas salgan mal, lo que peor llevo es tener que esperar”, asegura. Sin embargo, hay algo que supone una inyección de energía para Eduardo: “las visitas de familiares y amigos me animan muchísimo. Les echo mucho de menos, a ellos, a mi tierra, el mar…”.
Pero Eduardo no espera solo. Su familia también se ha tenido que armar de paciencia. “Esto es muy duro para todos. Mi familia siempre ha estado conmigo y ahora también les toca sufrir esto. Mi madre, que luchó toda la vida por mí, ahora está enferma de alzheimer, pero dentro de la desgracia de la enfermedad yo agradezco que no sea consciente de lo que está pasando, para que no sufra”, afirma resignado.
Preguntado por su estado de ánimo, Eduardo explica que cada día es diferente, pero que por lo general siempre intenta cargarse de positivismo: “Todos los días me repito: Eduardo, rendirse no es una opción. La vida me ha intentado quitar de en medio en varias ocasiones, y siempre he salido adelante. Es verdad que hay días que no tienes ganas ni de levantarte de la cama, pero hay que echarle narices. El que no arriesga nunca gana”.
Sobre el futuro, dice que sólo le pide una cosa: “Mi transplante. Sé que me tocará luchar mucho después en el postoperatorio, pero no me importa”. Y después, si todo sale bien, que va a salir, “volver a Utiaca para vivir allí. Tengo muchas ganas de volver”.
