La vía, de titularidad cabildicia, se encuentra en un estado lamentable
La calle Principal, que antiguamente formaba parte de la Carretera del Centro, se encuentra desde hace tiempo en un estado lamentable. El paso de los años y la falta de mantenimiento han propiciado que la vía se encuentre totalmente llena de socavones, grietas, baches… lo que convierte en insegura y peligrosa la circulación tanto para los vehículos como para las personas.
Los vecinos y comerciantes de la zona, que vienen mostrando su malestar por el estado de la carretera desde hace tiempo, no entienden cómo siendo una vía transitada a diario por centenares de conductores, se ha convertido en la carretera del Casco que en peor estado se encuentra. “Se han asfaltado casi todas las calles del pueblo, y da gusto circular, pero aquí… hemos ido al Ayuntamiento a ver qué pasa con esta y al parecer la carretera es del Cabildo”, lamenta un vecino.
En declaraciones a este periódico, el primer edil veguero, Antonio Ortega, asegura que desde el Ayuntamiento de San Mateo han solicitado en reiteradas ocasiones al Cabildo Insular el reasfaltado de la vía, unas gestiones que por el momento han sido 
infructuosas en el sentido de que la institución insular no ha informado sobre ninguna actuación a realizar. ”Hemos ido al Cabildo varias veces ya para pedir que hagan algo en esta carretera, porque entendemos que es una vía estratégica del municipio y estamos esperando una respuesta”, asegura el alcalde, que reconoce además que ha solicitado que “si no la van a reasfaltar, al menos que pongan parches en los baches, porque la calle está ya intransitable”.
A los más de 300 vecinos que a diario circulan por esta vía hay que sumar los clientes y proveedores de los comercios que se encuentran ubicados en la misma, así como los centenares de conductores que cada día la atraviesan como vía de escape de la Avenida Tinamar, siendo la única vía alternativa en sentido subida de la que disponen los conductores y la opción más rápida para aquellos que, desde la Carretera del Centro, se dirigen al Casco Antiguo.
