Pocos son los artistas oriundos de La Vega que tienen el privilegio de contar con alguna de sus obras expuestas en el mismo lugar donde fueron creadas. Este es el caso de
Miguel Rodríguez Sánchez y su particular y conocido Homenaje al Pocero Canario, situado en el cruce de la Avenida Tinamar con la Calle Canónigo Tomás Ventura y la Calle del Agua, importante trazado urbano del San Mateo de hoy y del pueblo de nuestro ayer.
Esta escultura, de patrimonio municipal, trata de buscar un significado y un sentido al complicado y peligroso trabajo que tantos hombres y tantas mujeres realizaron a lo largo de sus vidas en torno al agua, elemento natural escaso en Canarias y necesario para la subsistencia de la vida. Una escultura que representa un grito de socorro, desesperación o de auxilio ante la dureza del trabajo que significaba extraer el agua de las profundidades de la tierra para su uso cotidiano.
Podemos decir que <
El Homenaje al Pocero Canario, con unas medidas de 110x140x550cm, fue realizado con piezas pertenecientes a la maquinaria de pozos y galerías y otros elementos necesarios para realizar el trabajo. Colocado el 23 de junio de 1984, fue el resultado de la propuesta de un colectivo local con inquietudes culturales a la Corporación del momento, y finalmente la obra fue ejecutada por el artista veguero Miguel Rodríguez Sánchez, herrero e hijo de herrero, y con una fuerte relación con los poceros. Caracterizada por una vertiente surrealista, la obra se compone de varios cuerpos, siendo la parte más destacada y conocida la más alta con piezas circulares de motor.
En la prensa del momento quedaron reflejadas unas declaraciones del autor: “Se trata de saldar una deuda con esta clase trabajadora y que todo el pueblo de San Mateo estaba obligado a cumplir. Los poceros siempre fueron los grandes olvidados del campo, que trabajaban en unas condiciones pésimas, y cuyos jornales no alcanzaban para darle el pan a toda la familia” (Hidalgo:2017, 16-17). Dada la importancia social y cultural de este acontecimiento local en los años ochenta, cabe destacar la relación entre el espacio público – y su uso-, el arte público –y su utilidad- y la población que lo acoge, pues pasará a ser parte de la colectividad y de historia viva de un pueblo y de su patrimonio cultural y artístico, elementos de los que no debemos olvidarnos.
