Recordando a los lavaderos (o veleros)

En zonas de medianías de Gran Canaria, probablemente desde principios del siglo XX existen unos elementos relacionadas con la cultura y la arquitectura del agua, que facilitaban de alguna manera el acceso a la misma por parte de la población, para el lavado de la ropa y otros menesteres de las gentes que poblaban esta zona.

Atendiendo a Crespo (2012), podríamos tratar a los lavaderos como “unas construcciones realizadas al aire libre, en otros casos no interviene la mano del hombre y son espacios naturales, en algunas ocasiones estos lavaderos están cubiertos por un tejado o por algún tipo de techumbre, los lavaderos siempre son alimentados por una corriente de agua que suele proceder de un río, una fuente, una acequia o por la construcción de un acueducto o canaleta […]. La función de estos lavaderos, aparte de la ya sabida (lavar ropa y otros utensilios, llevando las mujeres la losa de madera o raspador, el jabón, el barreño…), era la de reunir en este espacio a las mujeres del pueblo para hablar y comentar cualquier noticia o acontecimiento que ocurría en el pueblo o en los alrededores”.

Muchos son los lavaderos existentes en la isla, centrándonos en los de La Vega, varios se concentran en el Barranco Guiniguada o de La Mina, Los Chorros, La Higuera, Las Lagunetas, Cueva Grande, Utiaca…

Resulta curioso conocer que los lavaderos son el origen de muchos topónimos, vocablos y expresiones que solemos utilizar hoy día, como lavar los trapos sucios, haciendo referencia a las conversaciones donde se criticaba a alguien, o hay ropa tendida, queriendo decir que había niños o alguien delante de quien no se podía hablar de algún tema. Además, en las medianías los lavaderos son conocidos también por veleros. Rodríguez Suárez (2008: 33) teoriza sobre el origen de la palabra: “Dos son las teorías expuestas por las múltiples fuentes consultadas; una de ellas nos viene a decir que como los veleros estaban en pleno campo y la ropa se tendía a secar en sus inmediaciones, las blancas sábanas movidas por el viento simulaban las velas de los barcos en que muchos parientes emigraron. La segunda teoría, menos romántica y más creíble es la que nos dice que el nombre de veleros les viene a esos lugares porque las mujeres tenían que madrugar mucho para coger sitio y poder hacer su colada y, al ser de noche todavía se tenían que aluzar con velas”. No olvidemos que en San Mateo hay una calle que se denomina Paseo del Velero donde, según cuentan, había un velero utilizado por los lugareños con gran frecuencia.

Los lavaderos, a modo de piletas solían situarse cerca de cauces de barrancos o escorrentías de agua, para facilitar su aprovechamiento humano y animal, pues eran utilizados también para dar de beber a los animales. Las heredades o propietarios de las aguas construían estos espacios para ahorrar en agua y crear un espacio de encuentro para las lavanderas y también vecinos del lugar. En general estaban hechos con mampostería, piedras de cantería, cal y otros materiales.

Actualmente estas construcciones han caído en el desuso por las nuevas tecnologías y canalizaciones del agua, tal vez un tanto agresivas con el entorno y con el medio donde se encuentran. Por tanto están sometidas a una situación de abandono que conlleva a su degradación debido a razones como las siguientes:

–        Acción humana: El hecho de encontrarse en estado de abandono hace que estas construcciones no reciban ningún tipo de mantenimiento ni conservación por parte de sus propietarios o de quienes los utilizaban, o bien se les realizan intervenciones no del todo acertadas. Debido a ello se degradan con mayor rapidez. Por otro lado, al encontrarse en espacios abiertos, en ciertas ocasiones algunos de estos lavaderos han sido víctimas de actos vandálicos provocando destrozos en las piedras, rayones, etc. Por último, algunos se encuentran cercanos a viviendas, y por encontrarse en cauces de barranco son propicios de convertirse en pequeños vertederos incontrolados, encontrándose en ellos electrodomésticos, aguas residuales o pequeñas basuras. No obstante, es de destacar que hace años se realizaron tareas de restauración, limpieza y acondicionamiento de estos espacios, devolviéndoles en parte su estado original, pero que de nuevo, al no ser acciones continuadas en el tiempo, vuelven a padecer estas situaciones.

–        Erosión externa: Al encontrarse al aire libre se observan lugares con erosión avanzada (forma mecánica), sobre todo en los que se ven materiales como la cal, que ya están dejando al descubierto la mampostería interior. El envejecimiento propio de estas estructuras es notorio al no tener ningún tipo de mantenimiento. Asimismo, la naturaleza también es una cusa del deterioro (forma biológica). Si paseamos alrededor de los veleros es normal encontrar excrementos de animales como conejos, ratas o ratones y aves, perros sueltos, así como un avance considerable de la población arbustiva en torno a ellos, que en algunos casos están tapándolos, llenándolos de tierra progresivamente, y filtrando las raíces por los muros. Además, el musgo también hace acto de presencia en la superficie de estas obras.

–        Forma física: Nuevamente el hecho de estar al aire libre y que se encuentran ubicados en lugares con elevados niveles de humedad por estar cercanos al cauce del barranco y en zonas de pocas horas de sol diarias, hace que tanto la temperatura como la humedad jueguen un papel importante en el deterioro de la propia piedra y otros materiales de las estructuras, lo que unido a las radiaciones solares pueden hacer daño principalmente a las piedras de cantería por no ser protegidas, tratadas o sustituidas.

Un patrimonio cultural y etnográfico que ha caído en el olvido con el paso del tiempo y que es una prueba más de la importante vinculación de La Vega con la cultura del agua y la riqueza que este líquido genera allá donde emana. Los lavaderos no solo fueron lugares donde lavar las ropas. Fueron espacios de conversación, puntos de encuentro entre vecinos, foráneos, comerciantes… No olvidemos que San Mateo ha sido desde su creación, un pueblo de paso para muchos, comunicando la ciudad con las cumbres y pueblos aledaños. El ganado, los animales que transportaban las mercancías, etc., muy probablemente hacían parada con sus dueños en los lavaderos para beber agua y recuperarse del camino andado.

Poniendo un ejemplo de buenas prácticas, el lavadero o velero de Utiaca fue sometido a acciones de restauración tanto de la estructura como del entorno. Un espacio que se revaloriza para nosotros, los habitantes de La Vega, y también para los visitantes que día tras día pasan por la GC-42 en dirección al municipio colindante de Teror o bien que se acercan a nuestra Vega.

Si a estas acciones de recuperación se añadiera una señalética mínima para interpretar el entorno, realizar senderos a su alrededor, etc., sería una buena forma de conservación y puesta en valor de nuestro rico patrimonio etnográfico.

Para terminar, lanzamos la propuesta de que entre todos y todas, realizásemos un esfuerzo por conservar, o al menos no deteriorar aún más, el patrimonio que ha formado parte de nuestra historia y que de alguna manera son parte de lo que hoy somos. Pues como bien reza el dicho, un pueblo que no conoce su historia está condenado a repetirla.
