Uno de los lugares más conocidos y probablemente más visitados por vegueros y vegueras, y también foráneos, es el Molino de San Mateo. Tal vez este edificio fuese uno de los primeros en construirse en el nuevo espacio que se estaba abriendo en el pueblo: la Calle del Agua, símbolo inequívoco de que el progreso estaba llegando a La Vega.

Cuando paseamos por la Calle del Agua, afortunadamente desde hace algunos años, podemos volver a disfrutar del olor a gofio recién hecho; aunque no solo eso esconden esas paredes. Su construcción, a inicios del siglo XX, fue promovida por Dionisio Jiménez Almeida, con la lógica finalidad de moler el millo y hacer gofio. Se trata de un edificio rectangular con dos plantas. En la planta baja se encuentra el molino y en la superior la vivienda. En el edificio destaca la galería cubierta del exterior, apoyada en pilares, y en cuya zona central se aprecia una pequeña balaustrada. El actual color anaranjado le da un aire rejuvenecedor a este viejo testigo de la historia más reciente de San Mateo.

Destacamos dos datos fundamentales para conocer parte de la historia de este molino. En primer lugar, la instalación de un motor diesel para realizar los trabajos de la molienda – de ahí el nombre de molino de fuego-. De la marca inglesa Ruston, el motor, con 25 CV, fue colocado en 1927; su energía también accionaba una dinamo de 15 Kw que permitió abastecer de luz eléctrica al pueblo por primera vez en su historia e iluminar las calles. Por ello el molino también llegó a ser conocido como <<fábrica de la electricidad>>. En 1943, y con la llegada de UNELCO, el molino dejó de ofrecer este servicio.

El segundo dato de interés es que este lugar fue escenario de reuniones vecinales para informarse, a modo de noticieros, de todo lo que acontecía. También se celebraron mítines políticos durante la II República Española (1931-1939); posiblemente siguieran esas reuniones y tertulias en años posteriores, por tratarse de un espacio ya habituado a ello. Este hecho le confiere al molino de fuego de San Mateo un valor añadido por el importante papel social, cultural y político que desarrolló en aquellas décadas, además de ser hoy día una seña de identidad y costumbre propias del pueblo.

Otro elemento de tantos que conforman el patrimonio de La Vega, y del que no debemos dejar de hablar, para que no caiga en el olvido de las generaciones venideras.
